The year 2022 celebrates the 10th anniversary of Zuzana Kubíčková‘s Atelier. The new collection Couture 2022/23 thus spontaneously became a look back at the past years and its pivotal pieces and themes. „I am returning to the manual techniques of fabric processing. These are time-consuming and partly experimental procedures for which there is usually no room and time in the regular function of the studio,“ explains the designer. The new garments emphasise and further develop small details and techniques that were part of the models of past collections. An example is a dress sewn from 60 pieces. Its silhouette is not complicated, yet searching for the best possible form led to the division into several vertically or diagonally placed stripes, so the fabric wraps perfectly around the body.
Characteristic handwork of Zuzana Kubíčková‘s atelier, such as — self-embroidering of fabric, sewing textile applications, and yardage creation — came into play again. The designer also returned to the old smocking technique,
which consists in drawing a regular grid on the fabric and then stitching it at given points to create a plastic pattern. She has also discovered a specific technique of getting texture by heating the fabric. „The garment is being
created from scratch; even before cutting the fabric, we form a new
texture,“ explains Zuzana.
The collection of thirty models is more or less simple in timeless silhouettes. It is therefore focused more on details, contrasts of materials and structures, and it offers the possibility of many combinations. The charm of the models lies in the development of the material, cut and decorative details, such as lines of crystal or pearl buttons making high slits at the back of dresses. Decorativeness has been emphasized by various slits and skin-revealing parts connected with glittering elements and the use of embroidery or a discreet pattern created by a combination of matte and shiny fabric. Transparent materials appear in bundance in the collection. By layering and connecting them, see-through parts are created, and thus the lower layers of the model appear. Silk chiffon, tulle pleats with sequins, lace and embroidery are complemented by envers satin or artificial leather. The color palette is minimalistic: shades of white, powder and black are refreshed with accents of red.
The concept of the entire show, which took place in the renovated Pavilion B at the Prague Exhibition Grounds, was created by a set designer Marek Cpin. Styling and art direction by Jan Králíček, graphic designs by Side2 studio and the show production by the Indep agency.
